Eddie Rickenbacker was a self-made man who became an ace in every field he touched, from car racing and shooting down 26 German fighters from the Red Baron's squadron in just six months during World War I to building an automobile company and developing Eastern Airlines into the nation's fourth largest airline. He owned Indianapolis speedway, dallied with movie stars, broke land and air speed and endurance records and made Eastern Airlines into the only consistently profitable airline during his tenure at its helm. He was fearless, fierce, an excellent executive and blessed with an indomitable will to live. He seemed to have nine lives, surviving numerous air crashes, some so serious the media expected him to die from his injuries; yet he survived and always returning to flying without a second thought.
