When Chas Barker and his friend Gray Foster are entrusted with overseeing the car lot belonging to Chas' elder brother Tel, they are not keen because it's one of many gangland businesses belonging to Tel Barker; who is a face in Southeast London. Problems arose when they neglected their duties and endangered the life of Chas' sister Lena.. Chas and Gray are momentarily relieved that Tel is currently in prison and can't get his hands on them,. When he is released from prison Tel doesn't react as they expected. In fact he arranges to go with his mates to a nightclub where Chas and Tel work as bouncers. The night goes from bad to worse when Chas notices that Tel is taking an interest in Marie; a girl,who was best friends with Gray's long time girlfriend Jan, and also somebody that Chas occasionally used for sex. So on the night that Tel came to the nightclub with his mates, it wasn't surprising that Marie was there with Jan, as she never missed any opportunity to hang around anywhere Chas was. Tel didn't know of her connection with his younger brother,and Chas' hopes that whatever was going on with Tel and Marie would be nothing more than a harmless nightclub flirtation were crushed when he not only left the club with her, but saw her constantly in the days and weeks following. Clearly she hadn't told Tel about her flings with his brother, and he wondered what would happen if that day came. Meanwhile, just as Chas and Gray were thinking that maybe their slip up at the car lot would go unpunished; they were told that they would be working full time for the Barker firm, and it was an offer they felt they couldn't refuse. As time went on and it was obvious that Tel was very serious about Marie they began to realise that she was in a position that could make their lives very miserable. Her confidence grew on a daily basis, and she showed a coldness and viciousness that even estranged her from her best friend Jan. Little could they have anticipated the changes that her presence would bring not only to them, but to the gangland world as a whole.
