The roots of both people are not in Russia proper (that is, Great Russia with Moscow as the capital) but in the Carpathian Mountains of central Europe. They typically call themselves "Rusins" ("Ru-sin-y") but that word in English was replaced with the commonly known term "Russian".
The term "Greek Orthodox" comes from Greece, from where the Apostles to the Slavs Cyril and Methodius starte off. The style of Christianity they brought to the Slavs was the style used in Greek Constantinople.
