I have always had an interest in Pompeii, that ancient city in Italy that was totally destroyed by a volcano. History tells us that Mt. Vesuvius, just a few miles from the site, erupted in 79 A.D. and quickly covered the city and its 20,000 to 25,000 inhabitants with 13-20 feet of hot lava and ash.
The city was excavated beginning in 1863 by archaeologists and is now a tourist attraction. My wife and I had a chance to visit this ancient site. It was very educational for us as we saw the well-preserved houses, streets, public buildings and temples of Pompeii.
