EXTRACT:
Before too long, she had reached the end of the shoreline, and a steep cliff prevented her from walking any further. She resigned to go back to her hotel room and get some sleep. There would be plenty of time for exploring in the daylight tomorrow.
As she turned, she caught a glimpse of someone else down in the cove — she squinted into the shadow, but it was too dark to make out who it was.
The breeze from the sea suddenly felt a little too cold, and the sand a little too sharp on her feet. The saltwater had left her legs feeling sticky and chaffed and she longed to be alone, warm and safe in her bed.
Who might that person be . . . ? Surely only another guest from the hotel, or a member of staff — after all, it was a privately owned island . . .
But what if it wasn’t? What if someone had just turned up on a speedboat to rob and murder rich guests who were silly enough to walk down empty beaches alone in the dark?
Sylvia kept walking, trying to dismiss, or at least ignore the tormenting thoughts. That’s hardly logical, she argued back feebly.
She got closer to the shadow of a human she had seen, and saw that it was a man . . . Perhaps, the man? . . . Yes, it was him.
