The roar of the crowd on the other side of the doorway seemed like a whisper to him. It was a far away sound that seemed like it was merely a fragment of a dream. In fact, everything seemed dream-like from where he was standing. Shadows danced behind him, and light filtered through the cracks in the doorway ahead. He found himself eager to find out what was on the other side, even though he didn't know what to expect.
He closed his eyes, feeling the beat of the music that had begun to play. The noise coming from the crowd was hushed in the wake of the rhythm, and he felt his whole body shiver with anticipation. In the background he heard his name being called out, though it barely affected his composure. Without opening his eyes, he pushed open the door, and the bright lights above flooded around him. For a brief moment he was engulfed in the blinding flash of white.
He opened his eyes slowly, taking in the magnificent scene. The entire stage was lit with flashing colors, and he couldn't make out the cheering audience through the brightness. He made his way to the center of the stage , and confidently picked up the microphone. The music paused for a moment, as if expecting him to call it back to life.
The lights above him felt like the sun, and he immediately felt exhilarated by the heat. He lifted the mic to his lips as the music returned to mix with the sound of his voice.
The moment he began to sing, the crowd's voices were drowned out completely. He closed his eyes, letting the music overwhelm him. In that moment he wasn't singing to the audience, but to himself. He felt the world fade away into an empty white nothingness, where only the music and his voice existed. He felt his heart ease as his mind went blank. When he sang he forgot everything that weighed him down. It was a beautiful moment of release.
In this world, nothing existed. There was no pain, no sadness, and no responsibility. He could be whoever he wanted in this world filled with light.
For the next few hours he would live here, though eventually he would have to return to the shadows where he'd begun. This world, with all it's freedoms, was still temporary. So, for the time he had left, he took in the feeling of being weightless.
In this place, he truly felt like he could fly.
David and Bryony have spent their whole lives together as friends. However, Bryony isn't willing to live like that any longer.
